The Church of the Patron Saint of Eleistria (The Merciful Holy Virgin), Koroni
Just before I leave Greece, mentally at least, for that pre Christmas slide into darkness, recession and hanging around our freezing shed, I mean our beautiful shop, here are a couple of pictures of the Monastery of Eleistria. This is attached to the side of the castle at Koroni and came about as a result of visions and a miraculous find. Back in the 1890s various individuals were simultaneously directed to dig in the area around the castle by visions of the Virgin Mary. Nothing came of this until a child suggested that the locals blow up a large rock face with dynamite. This caused some sort of small earthquake which exposed a fissure large enough for a man to crawl through. Inside was a small black Madonna which has been subsequently dated to around the 6th Century and another figure of a Saint. Cheered by this the Koronites built a monastery around this spot and since then miracles involving imperiled sailors in the nearby Mediterranean have happened.
We walked around the various churches and buildings that comprise the Monastery complex, including the ancient St Sophia built on the remains of a Temple dedicated to Apollo - if there’s one thing the Greeks do well, it’s that ancient stuff. But we couldn’t find the Black Madonna anywhere. Never mind; it’s a lovely spot and the nuns are friendly too. We’re selling some things that we bought in their shop.
