Our Lady of Deliverance, Tavira
On the edge of Tavira, a small town in the Algarve, Portugal is a chapel, Nossa Senhora do Livramento. This translates as Our Lady of the Deliverance and what she delivers in this instance is Sailors. The inside of the church is covered in paintings showing ships surviving tempests, cyclones, broken masts and all kinds of nautical woes. The most recent ones are from the 1970s the oldest, maybe 200 years before (Nothing much survives in Tavira from before 1755 when an earthquake destroyed the entire town.)
Sometimes there would be miraculous visions of Madonna and Child pointing the way to safety, other times sightings of celestial castles and beings just before the storm broke. To make it through such an event must have been a powerful experience and how marvellous to be able to share it in ones community as part of an ongoing narrative. Another episode in a collection of stories which has been going on for hundreds of years… I’m not sure how the sailors who didn’t survive are remembered. Perhaps there is another church for them.
