Graffiti Church
We cleared out some of the contents of this church, St Hughes in Bermondsey, South London. As you might just make out on the noticeboard, this was “An inclusive church, welcoming of all ages and abilities regardless of origin, sexuality, lifetsyles and beliefs”. So no problem if you’re a clumsy deviant satanist pensioner, then.
Anyway, this old Seaman’s Mission is going to be demolished and then remodelled in the traditional way as a block of flats with a mini church in the basement. As a form of signing off, the local youth were invited to come and graffiti the walls of the worship area. Was this desecration? An over eager attempt to be ‘Inclusive’? Or perhaps a way of showing that at the end of the day a church is simply a building and that the only thing that matters is the people that it is supposed to serve? Canon Bruce Saunders, the incumbent, struck me as a wise, humorous man so I will go for the latter interpretation.
